L Salon Artistic Director Elizabeth Stenstrom informs us that the trends in hair are clearly following fashion. “More layers with fashion, more layers with hair,” Stenstrom says and continues. “Lots of soft creamy colors and a little more pastel. Colors are really much more muted, and the cuts are really soft and romantic.” As always, L Salon’s expert staff is concentrating on using their technique to incorporate what’s hot with what works for the individual. A great example of those softer looks that are just as eye catching as ever is with the Modern Short Cut. The technique is called ribboning, explains Stenstrom. “As soon as you make the base darker it gives you texture. So you have the dark and the light and it looks like ribbon. For her hair we used smaller ribboning to really emphasize the look.” The idea is to create texture and contrast between the complexion and the hair. “You see the dark against the light complexion,” says Stenstrom. “Light on light would make her look very washed out, but as soon as you have the base darker against the light complexion, it gives you contrast.” For someone with a dark complexion the opposite is true. If the complexion is dark the base (root area) is light. If the complexion is light, the base is dark.
